Tom has been taken in; he had been outside for too long and is one of those cats that few people want to risk rescuing because of his age, appearance and possible health issues. It turned old that he was not feral, but gentle, well behaved and wants to keep himself clean.
He survived the winter under a BBQ cover. He is very arthritic and walks with a painful gait, probably the result of old injuries, his scars bear witness to many battles. Some people in the area did not want him around and had their dogs chase him away; other people threw things at him. Stronger neighbourhood cats would seek him out to do battle and he was being ganged up on. He always had fresh wounds. One lady began to feed him and he would come when she called, but her neighbours warned her that they did not want him around because they were afraid he had some disease. Cats would approach to bully him, even as he sat by her. Cat Rescue Network had no foster homes for him bur asked the lady to take him in, promising to help her get the vet care he needed. She wanted to help him and loved the old boy; she just needed some help to help him.
Tom was easy to put in a carrier and bring inside. He visibly relaxed when given a safe place in her apartment, out of the sweltering heat, with food and water that he could get to without having to sneak past other cats, dogs and people. He just slept and ate and listened to music beside the lady. He clearly trusts her and is very grateful that she saved him from his desperate situation. From his behaviour we know he once had a home. This gentle, intelligent boy will even come when called and lie down when the lady pats the floor.
He has been to a veterinarian, was hydrated, his wounds are being treated and he is getting antibiotics and eye/ear care, parasite control and neutered. He'll be treated for the arthritis. In time his coarse, brittle hair will grow shiney and soft. His tormentors are outside but Old Tom will be safe indoors.
